Jan Alweiss: What We Actually Know About Tiny Tim’s Second Wife

Jan Alweiss was Tiny Tim’s second wife, known as “Miss Jan.” Most sources date their wedding to June 26, 1984, in Las Vegas. On October 31, 1994, they renewed their vows at the Spooky World theme park in a ceremony broadcast on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Tiny Tim filed for divorce the next day. Her birth year, career, finances and current life are not reliably documented, and this article does not guess at them.
Who was Jan Alweiss, and why do people still search her name?
She appears in the historical record because of her marriage to the singer Tiny Tim (Herbert Khaury), famous for “Tiptoe Through the Tulips.” She is not known for any work of her own.
Her name is spelled two ways. Wikipedia’s Tiny Tim article uses “Jan Alweiss” in its infobox and “Jan Adelweiss” in the text. Encyclopedia Scribner entry says only that he “married Jan Alweiss” in June 1984.
Tiny Tim addressed women as “Miss” plus a first name, including “Miss Vicki” and “Miss Sue.” The nickname “Miss Jan” alone does not prove who someone is.
Most of the public interest comes from a single televised event in 1994, covered below.
Timeline: from a Christmas party to a 1995 divorce
Most detailed facts about the marriage trace to one biography, Justin Martell and Alanna Wray McDonald’s Eternal Troubadour (2016). Wikipedia’s account cites it throughout. That makes the facts consistently reported, not independently proven. The table marks where sources diverge.
| Date | Event | Source | Confidence |
| Dec. 1983 | Tiny Tim reportedly meets Jan at a Christmas party | Wikipedia, citing Martell | Medium |
| June 26, 1984 | Couple marries in Las Vegas | Wikipedia; Twin Cities Music Highlights, citing a 1984 Chicago Tribune Service report | Medium-High |
| 1984–1994 | Couple keeps separate lives and residences | Wikipedia | Medium-High |
| Sept. 14, 1994 | Tiny Tim proposes to Susan “Sue” Gardner | Wikipedia | Medium-High |
| Oct. 31, 1994 | Vow renewal with Jan at Spooky World | Wikipedia; Twin Cities Music Highlights | High |
| Nov. 1, 1994 | Tiny Tim files for divorce | Wikipedia | Medium-High |
| Late 1994 to June 1995 | Divorce finalized (sources disagree) | See below | Low-Medium |
| Aug. 18, 1995 | Tiny Tim marries Sue Gardner | Wikipedia | Medium-High |
| Nov. 30, 1996 | Tiny Tim dies in Minneapolis | Wikipedia | High |
Two sources agree on the wedding date from different directions. Wikipedia gives it as June 26, 1984. The Twin Cities page says Tiny Tim told a reporter in 1984 that he had secretly married on that date. Both likely trace back to his own account. One low-quality site gives June 20, which we treat as an outlier.
The 1994 Spooky World vow renewal
The renewal happened at Spooky World in Berlin, Massachusetts, on Halloween 1994, and it was broadcast live on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Wikipedia reports that Tiny Tim had objected to marrying Sue Gardner at the park and suggested the renewal with Jan as a substitute. Spooky World documentary reviews from Cinepunx and 1428 Elm independently confirm that he renewed his vows there in 1994.
The sequence matters. Tiny Tim had proposed to Gardner about six weeks earlier. He renewed vows with Jan on October 31 and filed for divorce on November 1. The reasons behind those choices come from his and others’ accounts, and we have no statement from Jan. We do not describe what she felt.
Why was the marriage unusual?
The couple lived apart for most of the marriage. Wikipedia says they stayed married while “maintaining separate lives and residences.” A footnote attributed to Martell says Jan moved into her own apartment after repeated clashes with Tiny Tim’s mother.
Some websites add other explanations, such as his cleanliness habits. We found no solid source for those. Other reports describe private disputes between the two. They rest on one-sided statements by Tiny Tim, and no account from Jan exists. We left them out. They add little public-interest value, and they concern a private person.
Her age, job and background: where sources disagree
Her age and occupation are not established. The table shows the main claims and what supports them.
| Claim | Where it appears | What supports it |
| Born around 1961, about 23 at marriage | Several lifestyle sites; one music outlet calls her a “23-year-old model” | No cited records |
| Age 34 in Dec. 1983 | Wikipedia, citing Martell | A published biography; Tiny Tim also said in a 1993 interview, excerpted by Scram, that she was “thirty-four, now forty-two” |
| Graphic artist | One site, attributing it to a 1994 newspaper report | We could not locate that report |
| Aspiring singer | Several sites | No cited source |
The 34-year-old figure rests on better evidence than the 1961 figure. It still comes from a single biography plus Tiny Tim’s own recollection, so we do not print a birth year. We also do not state her occupation.
What isn’t known, and why we aren’t guessing
Her net worth, current location, daily life and children are not documented. Sites that print a net worth, hobbies or a “where she is now” cite nothing. One site gives her net worth as about $1 million without a source.
For a private person with no public career of her own, that silence is the honest answer. We found no reliable source saying she had children with Tiny Tim. Wikipedia says Tiny Tim’s only child, Tulip, was born May 10, 1971, to his first wife, Victoria “Miss Vicki” Budinger. By marriage Jan became Tulip’s stepmother, but no source we found describes their relationship.
How to tell a sourced biography from a recycled one
Searching “Jan Alweiss” returns near-identical pages that repeat each other’s phrasing. A fact repeated on ten sites is still one claim. Four checks help:
- Look for a primary or book source. Does the page name a book, newspaper or archive with a page number? Eternal Troubadour is the main biography here. Its table of contents lists a chapter titled “Miss Jan,” according to an ebook preview. You can also check the publisher listing.
- Check whether the page admits uncertainty. A confident birth year with no source is a warning sign.
- Be wary of rich private detail. Hobbies, feelings and daily routines of someone with no public life rarely have a source.
- Compare dates across sources. Here, even Wikipedia’s text and infobox disagree on when the divorce was finalized.

How we verified this
We read Wikipedia’s Tiny Tim article, the Twin Cities Music Highlights page, Encyclopedia entry, and five competing pages on this keyword. We also read two Spooky World documentary reviews. Most details trace back to Martell and McDonald’s biography, which we did not read directly. We saw the Scram interview and the biography’s chapter list only as excerpts. We could not locate the 1994 newspaper report that one site cites, so we did not rely on it. We searched for Jan Alweiss independently of Tiny Tim and found nothing we could verify, so we say nothing about her life after the marriage. Facts may change if better sources emerge.
